  1. Week 23 Preparing date: 22/2/2023 Teaching date: 24/2/2023 PERIOD 66: UNIT 8: SPORTS AND GAMES LESSON 5: SKILLS 1 I. AIMS 1. Knowledge: Students will be able to read for general and specific information about favourite sports stars. Talk about famous sports people they like. 1.1. Vocabulary: - Related to the topic “Sports and games ”: Career, begin ( start), hero, score, national. 1.2. Grammar: The past simple, imperatives 2. Competences - Autonomy and self study, communication and collaboration, problem solving and creativity . - Reading comprehension for general and specific information about favourite sports stars and talk about famous sport people they like. - To improve group work, independent working, pair work, linguistic competence, cooperative learning and communicative competence. 3. Quality - Ss will be more aware of spending time playing sports and games and choose the best sport and game for yourself. - To develop and improve for students the following qualities: patriotism, kindness, hard work, honesty, responsibility. II. TEACHING AIDS 1. Students: Students’books, workbooks, notebooks, pens 2. Teachers: Textbook, lesson planing, computer accessed to the Internet, projector, pictures, word cards III. TEACHING PROCEDURES 1. Class organization/ Warm up ( Chatting) T shows a picture about some famous football players in Viet Nam. T asks Ss to name some famous football players in Viet Nam.
  2. - T asks some questions : + Do you like playing or watching football ? + What sports do you play? + Where do you often play? + Who do you play with? - T introduces the lesson . 2. New lesson 2.1 .Reading:Vocabulary - T explains to them if necessary. + Career (n): Nghề nghiệp, sự nghiệp. + begin = start (v): Bắt đầu + hero (n): Anh hùng + national(a): Quốc gia + score (v): Ghi bàn, bàn thắng, tỷ số. + take part in(v): Tham gia vào + female(n)>< male: Nữ (nam) + tournament(n): Giải đấu + champion(n): Quán quân a. Activity 1: Work in pairs. Discuss the questions. * Aim: To activate Ss' knowledge of the topic of the reading text. * Content: Have some information about Pelé * Output: To give their ideas about Pelé they know as many ideas as possible * Process. Tell them to work in pairs to discuss the questions in this activity. + What do you know about Pelé? + What is special about him? - Encourage them to give their ideas in front of the class. - Have Ss work in pairs and discuss the questions about Pelé. - It is not important whether they know much or little information about Pelé as long as they talk with each other. b. Activity 2: Read the dialogue quickly to check your ideas in 1. * Aim: To help Ss develop their reading skill for general information (skimming). * Content: Read the dialouge and check Pele’ information * Output: Find some information they can speak English * Process. - Tell Ss to read the dialouge quickly and check their ideas in 1. - Set a strict time limit to ensure that Ss read quickly for information. - Encourage Ss to give any piece of information they can remember (and it is not so important what they say as long as they speak English). Key: - He is the best footballer. - He is from Brazil. - He won the World Cup.

Activity 3: Read the text again and answer the questions. * Aim: To help Ss develop their reading skill for specific information (scanning); To help Ss broaden and deepen their knowledge of Pelé. * Content: Read the dialouge carefully and answer the questions. * Output: Ss know some vocabulary, answer the questions correctly. * Process. - Give Ss some time to practise reading the dialogue. - Ss listen to teacher (or other Ss) read aloud while tracking the dialogue with their fingers. - Ask Ss to read in chorus the new and difficult words 7 phrases in the dialogue. - Check with Ss the meanings of the new words. - Ask Ss to find the key words in each question. Then find the information in the dialogue to answer the questions. - Confirm the correct answers to the class. Key: 1. Pelé was born in 1940. 2. His father did./ His father taught him. 3. He scored 1,281 goals in total. 4. (He became Football Player of the Century) in 1999. 5. They call him “The King of Football". Further practice: - If time allows, have Ss talk about Pelé (what other information they know about him, whether they like him or not, and why, etc.), - Have Ss talk about famous football players they know and ask them who they think is the best football player. 2.2. Speaking d. Activity 4: Read the following facts about two famous sportspeople. * Aim: To help Ss practise reading and understand fact files of famous sportspeople. * Content: Read, find new words, undestand everything about the fact files of two famous sports people . * Output: Ss undestand everything about the fact files of two famous sports people . * Process - Ss work by themselves and read the fact files of two famous sports people. - T may ask them whether they know these sports people, and what else they know about them. - T makes sure Ss understand everything and they can use these facts to prepare for the next speaking activity. 1.Hoang Giang - No.1 sportsman in shooting + Born: 1978 in Viet Nam + 1995: finished sports school + 1996: took part in a shooting competition + 2001: won a gold medal for shooting 2.Jenny Green - one of the best female golfers in history
  4. + Born: 1972 in Greenland + 1987: became a member of local golf club + 1994: took part in a female golf tournament + 2002; became the female golf champion e. Activity 5: Choose one sports person in 4. Talk about him / her. Use the following cues. * Aim: To help Ss practise speaking about a famous sportsperson in 4. * Content: Talk about one sports person in 4. * Output: Ss can speak fluently about their chosen sports person, correct friends mistakes. * Process. - Have Ss work in pairs or groups. - Have them take turns to talk about their chosen sports person. - Let them have freedom to choose what information to mention. (They can skip some points, or add some of their own.) His/Her name The sport he/ she plays Why he/she is famous You like him/ her or not Explain why - While Ss are talking, T goes round the class and monitors. - Remember not to stop them in order to correct their mistakes. - When the talking time is over, T collects common errors and discusses them with the whole class. - T gives some examples: 1. His name is Hoang Giang, he was born in 1978 in Viet Nam. He plays shooting. He is famous for being No.1 sportsman in shooting. In 1996, he took part in a shooting competition. In 2001, he won a medal for shooting. 2. Her name is Jenny Green. She was born in 1972 in Greenland. She plays golf. She is famous for being one of the best female golfers in history. In 1987, she became a member of local golf club. In 1994, she took part in a female golf tournament and in 2002, she became the female golf champion. 3. Consolidation Have Ss summarise what they have learnt in the lesson with the two skills. 4. Homework - Learn Vocabulary - Do exercise in workbook - Prepare Unit 8 - Lesson 6: Skills 2
